After your Procedure

Catheter Placement, Replacement or Removal

  • DO NOT lift anything heavy, strain or exercise for 24 hours.
  • DO NOT lie flat for the next 3-6 hours, and if needed, rest in a reclining chair or keep your head and chest elevated with a pillow if lying in bed.
  • DO hold pressure on your dressing anytime you cough or sneeze.
  • DO apply pressure directly yo the access site if any bleeding, oozing or swelling occurs.
  • DO keep the site clean and dry, DO NOT shower, bathe, swim or do anything that could get your dressing wet.
  • DO notify your physician or call 9-1-1 to be taken to the nearest emergency room if you experience any of the following:
    • Elevated temperature of 100°F or more.
    • Chills
    • Redness, swelling or drainage at the access site
    • Neck swelling
    • Difficulty swallowing
    • Excessive bleeding
  • DO use Tylenol for pain. If your pain is not relieved by Tylenol, call your physician.
  • DO instruct your dialysis care team to complete your access site care per unit protocol.
  • Diet: You may resume your usual diet as tolerated.
  • Medication: Follow your doctor's specific post-procedure instructions. It is important to keep an updated copy of your medications and regimen available for healthcare providers. Notify your doctor should there be any changes made to your current medication list.

Angiogram, Angioplasty, Stenting, Declotting, Fistula Maturation

  • No heavy lifting, straining, or exercising for 24 hours.
  • Keep site clean and dry. Watch site carefully, call doctor if you have: excessive pain, unusual bleeding and/or swelling or fever more than 100°F, redness or heat at access site, and/or cold, numbness, tingling of hand or fingers.
  • Keep arm elevated on pillow for comfort. If minimal bleeding, oozing, or swelling: apply pressure, elevate arm, call Access Center or your Doctor. If bleeding is excessive and will not stop call 911.
  • Use Tylenol for pain. If pain is not relieved with Tylenol, call your Doctor.
  • Remove bandage in 24 hours.
  • Diet: You may resume your usual diet as tolerated.
  • Medication: Follow your Doctor's specific post-procedure instructions. It is important to keep an updated copy of your medications and regimen available for healthcare providers. Notify your Doctor should there be any changes made to your current medication regimen.
  • Go to your usual dialysis treatment as scheduled.
